Parodies of Parity, by Richard Falk

Richard Falk, is the Albert G Milbank Professor Emeritus of International Law at Princeton University and Research Fellow, Orfalea Center of Global Studies. He is also the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights. Richard Falk has written extensively on Palestine Israel.

In this article Falk’s basic presumption is that there is an asymmetry in the Palestinian Israeli equation. He calls for acknowledging the structural distortion and illegitimacy between Palestine and Israel and argues that political progress presupposes an equitable relation between oppressor and oppressed. This is a paramount precondition for a viable political arrangement.

It is incumbent on Israel to do what it take for a sustainable peace. Ending the occupation and restoring 1967 borders would be a beginning before the issues of Jerusalem and refugees and the issues that have emerged- settlements and the Wall- are dealt with. In short, justice and justice alone must form the basis of any negotiations.
